To maintain a healthy habitat, follow this seasonal schedule: Spring: Clean right before the nesting season begins. Summer: Check after each brood leaves (usually 1-2 times). Autumn: Give it a final cleaning before winter. During Winter, we recommend leaving the house up, as many birds use the sturdy cedar structure for essential thermal shelter during freezing nights.

Maintenance is easy: Gently unscrew the roof (Part F) so it swings open. While wearing gloves, remove all old nesting material, feathers, and droppings (discard these away from the house to avoid attracting pests). Scrub the inside with a mix of 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts water—avoid harsh chemicals like bleach. Rinse with clean water and let it air dry completely before swinging the roof back into place and tightening the screw.

To keep your backyard birds safe, periodically check that the perch, entrance hole, and roof are intact. Since wood is a natural material that can shift, simply tighten your mounting straps or screws occasionally to keep the house stable. This ensures the nesting environment remains secure against wind and predators.

The dimensions and entry hole are specifically designed to attract small, cavity-nesting birds. Depending on your region, you can expect to see Sparrows, Chickadees, Wrens, Tits, and Bluebirds.
