Are Bats Mosquito Eaters?
Yes. Bats are among the biggest insect eaters around. While other animals have laid claim to eating mosquitoes, most agree that bats work through the largest volume. The crane fly may be good, but the bat gets through more.
Other animals that eat mosquitoes include dragonflies, fish, birds, and some frogs. So bats certainly aren’t the only mosquito eaters around, but they do good job at it. Why? Sheer volume of insects consumed.

Understanding What Bats Eat
Most bats have fairly strict diets that consist of a few things, but humans tend to only think of one: blood. Yep, many people think bats only consume blood due to our friend Dracula. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
In fact, there’s only a few species of bats that even drink blood. None of these species live in the United States. They’re found in Central and South America.
The rest of the 1,200 bats species tend to avoid drinking blood. These flying mammals prefer to eat things like bugs, mosquitoes, fruits, and fish.
How Many Mosquitoes Can Bats Eat?
Now we’re getting to the good stuff — and to the number that gets repeated without a caveat almost everywhere.
Bats may be smaller animals, but they certainly do eat a lot. Many a bat species can eat over 30% of their body weight in bugs in a single night of foraging.
Under lab conditions, with a bat placed in an enclosure full of insects and no competition, feeding rates of up to roughly 1,000–1,200 insects an hour have been recorded. Treat that as the ceiling, because that is what it is. In the wild a bat forages for a couple of hours, shares the airspace with the rest of the colony, and takes whatever is flying that night — so real totals sit well below the trial figure. Note also that the trial number is insects, not mosquitoes specifically.
Should You Believe the Hype?
Some argue that bats don’t make much difference to mosquitoes. Many claim that the only people crediting these flying mammals with insect control are the ones who advocate for bats in the first place. And they may have a point.
See, science has shown that mosquitoes only make up around 3% of the diet of most bat species. That’s a modest share. But we dug a little deeper here at Big Bat Box. Why?

Only 3% of Their Diet?
One testimonial certainly doesn’t settle the question. We know that. So we kept thinking about it.
If mosquitoes only make up 3% of a bat’s diet, then why do bat habitats end up working? How does a colony change the mosquito pressure in a backyard?
Run the arithmetic and it becomes clear.
Let’s take a Big Bat Box for example. Our main habitat can hold up to 200 bats. If a colony forms, most users find 100-200 bats living in it. That’s pretty common. For simplicity, we’ll say 100 bats.
Now, these 100 bats may search for food 2-3 hours a night — give or take. Let’s stick with three hours.
And how many insects can each of them take in an hour? The lab ceiling is around 1,200. Let’s round down to 1,000.
Then we need to factor in how often a bat will eat a mosquito. As mosquitoes make up around 3% of the bat diet, that’s a straightforward number to apply.
100 bats × 3 hours × 1,000 insects × 0.03 = 9,000
100 bats eating 1,000 insects an hour for three hours is 300,000 insects a night. Mosquitoes at 3% of that brings you to 9,000 mosquitoes.
Why that 9,000 is a ceiling, not a forecast
Every input above is the best case. The 1,000 an hour is a lab rate, not a field rate. Three hours of solid foraging is generous. A hundred bats assumes a fully formed colony, which takes a season or more to build. Halve each of those and you land nearer 1,000 mosquitoes a night — which is still a real dent in the population around a single yard, and the honest version of the claim.
That is what natural control looks like: fewer mosquitoes, not none. A few weeks of steady colony activity and you notice the difference outdoors.
