Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size affects both capacity and climate control. A 2-chamber bat house can host around 50–75 bats and suits smaller yards or bachelor colonies. Larger 3- or 4-chamber bat houses can hold several hundred bats, including maternity groups, and they retain heat more evenly—important in regions with wide temperature swings.

Too small can limit success, but too big is rarely a problem. If you have space and sun exposure, choosing a larger house gives you the best long-term results.

  • The best bat house color depends on your local climate. Darker colors, like black or dark brown, absorb more heat and work well in cooler regions with mild summers. Medium shades, such as natural wood or mid-tone brown, suit temperate areas. Light colors, like cedar or tan, reflect sunlight and are best in hot climates where summers regularly exceed 95°F (35°C). The goal is to keep the bat house interior within the preferred range of 80–104°F (27–40°C).

    For example in the US:

    • Darker boxes (black/dark brown): Northern states like Minnesota, Vermont, or Michigan.
    • Medium brown boxes: Central states with moderate summers, such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Kansas.
    • Light boxes (cedar/tan): Hot southern states like Texas, Florida, Arizona, or Georgia.

If you’re unsure, it’s usually better to go a bit darker, especially in areas with cooler nights.

    • The best location for a bat box is 15–20 feet (4.5–6 meters) on a south or southeast-facing wall or pole. A building wall works especially well in colder or dry climates because it helps regulate interior temperatures.
    • If you’re using a pole, consider mounting two bat houses back-to-back for better heat balance. Choose a sunny, open location that stays between 80–104°F / 25-40°C .
    • Avoid shaded areas, dense woods, or monoculture farms—bats prefer open spaces near water sources or areas where they’ve previously roosted.

    • It’s possible, but not recommended. Tree-mounted boxes are often too shady and leave bats vulnerable to predators like owls or raccoons.
    • Research shows they take twice as long to attract residents compared to wall- or pole-mounted boxes. If no other option exists, use the sunniest, most open tree you have, and keep the bat house at least 20 feet (6 meters) above ground and away from branches.
  • The capacity depends on size and placement. A 2-chamber bat house may host 50–75 bats, while larger 3- or 4-chamber houses can support several hundred, including maternity colonies.

Since bats cluster for warmth, providing enough roosting space helps them thrive. If you’re unsure which size to pick, it’s generally better to go larger—too big is rarely a problem, while a box that’s too small can limit colony growth and reduce long-term success.

  • Some bat houses attract residents within a few weeks, but on average it takes 2–6 months. Larger houses can take up to two years to host a colony.

Location is key: place the box near water, in an open, sunny area, and at the correct height (15–20 feet / 4.5–6 meters). Bigger houses often fill more quickly once discovered, since they offer multiple roosting options. If in doubt, choosing a larger model improves your chances of attracting and retaining bats.

  • Yes—bats are highly effective insect predators. A single bat eats thousands of mosquitoes and crop pests each night, making them natural, chemical-free pest control. Unlike insecticides, which can harm pollinators and other wildlife, bats target insects while supporting biodiversity.

Installing a bat box reduces pests and helps conserve bat populations, many of which are at risk from habitat loss. Larger bat houses also encourage bigger colonies, which means more effective pest control for your property.

Patience is a Virtue and this Bat House Works!

Amazing, we have Bats!! Took about 8 months and I about gave up but here we are! Had to take back the space from wasps a few times but finally won. Do your homework because these boxes need to be facing the right way and giving the bats access to water is important. We used a bird bath. Don’t give up just be patient and they will find your bat hotel. Good luck!

Still going strong after probably 3 or more years

I put it up in my backyard unprotected a couple years ago and it still looks new. No bats, though.

Came a bit damaged but great product

Sturdy and can't wait for my bats to find it. It came with some damage (pictured) but I'm keeping it because I hate to waste AND when it's up high on my garage it's not noticeable. But still, bit of a bummer to receive damaged goods.
Put these houses east or south facing and plant native night blooming flowers nearby for happy bats 🥰 they love morning sun.

Nice bat box

I was thinking about making one of these but for this price and the quality your just better off buying it pre made. I unfortunately have not been able to hang it yet but that's coming as soon as the snow melts! Comes with everything you need to hang it and the material/finish it spot on. You can't go wrong!

5 stars so far, not sure how long it will last.

Well built, easy to install, will update when bats come.
Update:
6 weeks after installing I counted 14 bats in the house last evening. They come out pretty quick so it is hard to get a shot of them.
A reminder if you are planning in installing a bat house, the house must be facing East or West to work.
Great purchase, great build, great fun!

Beautiful box, never got bats and was eaten by woodpeckers

I hung this box in June 2022 after looking online for the best recommended bat box. I hung it on top of a flag pole facing south.

I never had any evidence of bats, but was giving them time. Everything I read said it can take a couple years for them to find it, and to try other locations after waiting.

This year (two years after hanging it), the woodpeckers found it. I just pulled it down with the intention of adding metal plates, but it just doesn't look like it is worth it with how much it's weathered, in addition to the woodpecker damage. I don't know if I'm supposed to take it down every year and repaint?

How well made and easy to install

I could not be happier with this bat house. The first thing we noticed was the wonderful cedar smell as soon as we opened the box. The box is so well built and sturdy. The instructions were easy to read and install. We had to modify where the hardware had to be placed since we have a family of squirrels living right above where the box was placed. Every night for the past 3 years we’ve watched bats come out at dusk to get the bugs for the night. Nothing makes my family happier than to know we might have our own place for the bats soon!! Thanks for making this product for both us and the bats…

Get some bat phermone spray to use with it.

We were having our roof replaced. We had bats living in a space between the porch roof and house roof. The porch roof was being ripped off. A pest control expert recommended these houses, to give them somewhere to move to. I put it on the south facing wall of our house, a sunny location. I bought bat phermone/urine scent, and sprayed it and hung it up. Bats were living in it the next day (we could see their little bat poops on a white strip at the bottom of the wall under the bat-house). They seem to like it, so it's a win/win. We live in a forrest with lots of mosquitos, so we are glad the bats continue to be part of our yard's ecosystem. It was relatively easy to hang, strongly recommend.

Photo: The black bat house, on our south facing wall. Above it is an older bat house, that was never occupied. I think that's because it was too light colored, and we hung it too high up under the roof ledge; it was often in shade, and probably too cold for the bats. So we got the black house (to attract more heat) and hung it a little further down to get more sun.

It took a year, but it worked

We had bats in our attic. I mounted this thing before I sealed up their hole (after they left at night). A year later they seem to be returning and moving into their new house.

This was a challenge!
Box was fine, though a bit more roof protection ie tin or shi gle would have been nice.
Very well built.
Came with hardware to mount to a hoise, i would suggest adding hardware to mount to a pole as well.

Bat House

After getting surprised by bats under our deck 1 morning. I started googling and decided to put 1 on a tree away from the house. Said its certified, but not the same as the internet says. Cedar is the key, but this is hard to tell. Also there are no vents, it maybe too hott in Ga. Mounting, brackets is our biggest complaint. I saw some with a hole in the bottom so we decided to drill 2 and use ext screws with washers to secure. Wood is thin so be careful not to overtighten. The L bracket will rust, paint is already coming off and its shiny. The screws are long so be careful where u put them, could injure a bat inside. We had to bend them for the tree. We live on lake so we have bugs! Now we wait to see if Dracula comes. Hope this works.

Put this up a month or so ago to replace an old bat box that the roof had lifted on after a hurricane rolled through last year.
