Why Your Bat Box Is Still Empty
Most bat habitats that sit empty are not badly made — they are badly sited, and almost always for one of a handful of reasons. This guide works through the placement mistakes we see most often, how to recognise each one in your own yard, and exactly what to change.

Bats are highly sensitive to microclimates. The balance of warmth, safety and accessibility is what separates an empty box from a busy roost, and research from Bat Conservation International shows occupancy rates increase substantially when boxes are sited in sunny, sheltered, predator-free spots.

Mistake 1: Mounted Too Low
Anything below 10 feet (3 m) puts bats within reach of ground predators and gives them too little drop to get airborne on the way out.
The fix: remount at 12–20 feet (4–6 m). This is the most common single fault and the most straightforward to correct.
Mistake 2: Too Much Shade
A habitat in shade never reaches the temperature a maternity colony needs. Eaves, porch roofs and tree canopy all quietly cost you sun hours.
The fix: aim for at least 6–8 hours of direct sun a day. Check the spot at three points during the day before you commit — a wall that looks sunny at noon can be in shadow by 2pm.
Mistake 3: Facing the Wrong Way
North-facing habitats rarely warm up, whatever else you get right.
The fix: face south or southeast. In cooler climates, use a darker non-toxic finish to absorb more heat; in hotter regions, go lighter to prevent overheating.
Mistake 4: Branches Too Close
Overhanging branches shade the habitat, hand predators a launch point, and block the drop-in approach bats use to land.
The fix: keep the landing area clear — at least 20 feet (6 m) from the nearest branches, with open space directly below.
Mistake 5: Mounted on a Tree
Trees are the intuitive choice and the weakest one. Trunks are shaded, branches sit close by, and bats find habitats mounted on buildings and poles considerably faster.
The fix: move to a wall or a pole. Habitats on structures warm faster, and occupancy rises accordingly.
Mistake 6: Too Far From Water
Bats drink on the wing and hunt where insects concentrate. A habitat with no water within range asks a lot of its residents.
The fix: site within half a mile (800 m) of a pond, stream or lake where you can. Gardens, meadows and wood edges add insect-rich hunting ground.
Mistake 7: A Loose Mount
A habitat that sways in wind will not hold a colony, no matter how good the sun exposure is.
The fix: fix it rigidly into structure rather than cladding, and re-tighten the hardware at your annual winter check.
Mistake 8: Moving It Too Soon
Bats can take a year or two to find a new roost. Relocating every few months resets that clock every single time.
The fix: give a well-sited habitat two full seasons before you move it. If you do move it, change one variable rather than five, so you learn something from the result.
The Near-Mistake: Only One Habitat, One Orientation
Not strictly an error, but it narrows your odds. Bats are selective and conditions vary across a single property. Installing two or three habitats in different orientations — one south, one east — raises the chance that one of them offers the microclimate a colony wants.

Timing: When You Install Also Matters
Spring is the best season to install, just before bats return from hibernation. Summer installs still work, though colonies may take longer to settle. Winter installs are fine — just do not expect occupancy until spring. The Bat Conservation Trust confirms that spring placement yields the highest first-year occupancy rates.

Is the Habitat Itself the Problem? Chamber Count by Use Case
Occasionally placement is fine and the model is the mismatch — a single-chamber habitat in a cold, exposed yard has little thermal buffer to work with.

Maintenance and Monitoring
Habitats need little maintenance, but check annually for wasp nests or damage. Avoid disturbing bats during maternity season (June–August). Repair or replace weathered wood over time.
Patience Pays Off
Even with everything corrected, bats may not move in immediately. It can take months, or a year or two, for a colony to discover and adopt a roost. Once they find yours, they will often return year after year.
