A bat habitat you build yourself succeeds or fails on construction detail: the timber you choose, how wide the chambers are, how rough the interior surfaces are, and how well the joints seal. This guide covers the build itself — materials, measurements, and the finish work that decides whether bats will actually use it.

Start With Untreated Timber
Use rough-sawn, untreated wood. Cedar is the standard choice because it resists rot and weather on its own — which is exactly why it needs no chemical treatment. Pressure-treated lumber, plywood bonded with formaldehyde-based glues and interior-grade boards all off-gas into a sealed cavity that bats then breathe for months at a time. Exterior faces can take a water-based stain or paint. Interiors stay bare.
Plan on 3/4 inch (19 mm) stock for the back panel and sides, with a solid one-piece roof. Stone and brick also work as thermally stable materials if you are building an integrated habitat into a structure.
Chamber Spacing: The Measurement That Matters Most
Bats roost by wedging into a crevice, so chamber width is the detail to get right. Aim for 3/4 to 1 inch (19–25 mm) between partitions, held consistent from top to bottom by spacer strips down each side. Too wide and the crevice loses its appeal; too narrow and bats cannot enter.
Give the chambers height as well as width. A roosting cavity of at least 20 inches (50 cm) from the entrance to the ceiling lets bats move up and down to find the temperature they want. Add a landing area of 3 to 6 inches (8–15 cm) of roughened panel below the entrance.

Roughen Every Interior Surface
Bats need grip to climb and hang. Score horizontal grooves roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch (6–12 mm) apart across every interior face, both sides of each partition, and the landing area — or line them with durable plastic mesh. Smooth interior wood is one of the most common reasons a home-built habitat gets ignored. Never use fabric or fibreglass mesh; bats catch their claws in it.
The Entrance
The opening runs along the open bottom of the habitat. Keep it narrow enough to exclude birds and snakes, and wide enough that bats pass freely — the same 3/4 to 1 inch (19–25 mm) as the chambers. The roughened landing area below the entrance is what gives bats something to grab as they swoop in.
Seal It Against Drafts and Rain
A crevice roost has to hold heat. Caulk every side and roof joint with exterior-grade sealant as you assemble, and add a ventilation slot about 6 inches (15 cm) up from the bottom of the sides if you are in a warm region. Tilt the roof so water runs off the back, and overhang it by 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) to shed rain clear of the entrance.
The bottom stays open. Droppings fall straight through, which keeps cleaning to almost nothing and means less disturbance for the colony.
Assembly, Step by Step
- Cut your panels to size and check every edge is square.
- Score or mesh the interior faces of the back panel and all partitions before anything goes together.
- Caulk the side joints, then screw the sides to the back panel with exterior-grade screws.
- Fit the spacer strips and partitions, keeping the chamber gaps even top to bottom.
- Fit the front panel, leaving the bottom open.
- Caulk and fit the roof with its overhang, then seal the top seam.
- Finish the exterior in a color suited to your climate. Leave the interior bare.
With materials to hand, a first build takes a weekend rather than a week.
Build or Buy?
A build is satisfying, and the tolerances are unforgiving — chamber width, interior texture and sealing all have to be right at the same time before bats will move in. If this is your first habitat, a tested design gives you a known-good baseline to measure a future build against.

Untreated timber, tight and rough chambers, sealed joints, an open bottom. Get those four right and the habitat will last decades. Then give it a properly chosen spot and be patient — it can take months, sometimes a season or two, for bats to find a new roost and adopt it as their own.
